Why is Amazon Buying a Nuclear Power Plant?
Amazon Goes Nuclear
The Peak
Amazon is joining the nuclear energy race, aligning itself with other Big Tech giants like Microsoft and Google in a bold move towards achieving sustainable power. As Big Tech's energy needs skyrocket, so do their investments in solutions that go beyond wind and solar. Today, we're looking into Amazon's latest strides to harness nuclear energy to power its growing operations.

Amazon Invests in Nuclear Energy: What You Need to Know
Heatmap News
Amazon is making a substantial $500 million investment in nuclear power projects across Washington State, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to support its rising energy needs. As demand for its cloud services and eCommerce operations continues to grow, Amazon is looking to nuclear energy as a reliable, carbon-free power source that can meet its ambitious sustainability targets.
This investment comes as Amazon has reached a milestone of achieving 100% renewable energy for its global operations—an achievement they originally set for 2030 but accomplished seven years early. Nuclear energy is becoming an essential part of Amazon's strategy to continue its path toward a net-zero carbon footprint by 2040.
Why Nuclear? AWS CEO Matt Garman Explains
According to Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, nuclear energy presents an opportunity to ensure stable power for Amazon's growing operations.
"Nuclear is a safe source of carbon-free energy that can help power our operations and meet the growing demands of our customers while helping us progress toward our Climate Pledge commitment to be net-zero carbon across our operations by 2040"
He pointed out that the demand for power is expected to grow significantly, and that wind and solar alone won't be able to keep up. "We see the need for gigawatts of power in the coming years, and there's not going to be enough wind and solar projects to meet the needs. Nuclear is a great opportunity, and the technology is advancing in a way that makes it safer and easier to implement," Garman added.
SMRs: The Small Modular Reactors Leading the Charge
A big part of Amazon's nuclear initiative involves building advanced small modular reactors (SMRs) in Washington State. SMRs are cutting-edge nuclear reactors with about a third of the power capacity of a traditional nuclear plant, but they are easier to construct and scale. These reactors, which will be owned and operated by Energy Northwest, are expected to generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 770,000 homes.
SMRs are appealing because they can produce low-carbon electricity in smaller, more manageable units. They are also designed to be safe and flexible, addressing some of the safety concerns traditionally associated with nuclear power.
Big Tech's Energy Moves: How Microsoft and Google Are Playing Their Part
Amazon isn't alone in its pursuit of nuclear energy. Microsoft and Google have also made moves to harness nuclear power for their operations. Microsoft's data centers are set to be powered by the reopening of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant by 2028, while Google has signed an agreement to purchase nuclear energy from Kairos Power by 2030.
This shift towards nuclear is a strategic decision by Big Tech to ensure they can meet their massive energy demands in a sustainable manner. As the tech industry continues to expand, the challenge is no longer just about finding renewable energy but about finding sources that can scale and provide consistent power.
The Road to Net-Zero: Amazon Reaches Its Renewable Goal Early
Amazon also recently announced that it has achieved its goal of matching all electricity consumed by its global operations with 100% renewable energy—seven years ahead of its original target. This rapid transition highlights Amazon's dedication to sustainability and carbon reduction, as well as its willingness to explore all viable paths to reach net-zero.
"One of the fastest ways to address climate change is by transitioning our society to carbon-free energy sources, and nuclear energy is both carbon-free and able to scale," said Garman. "Our agreements will encourage the construction of new nuclear technologies that will generate energy for decades to come."
TL;DR – Key Takeaways
Amazon Joins the Nuclear Race: Amazon is investing $500 million in nuclear energy projects to support its growing power needs.
Why Nuclear?: Wind and solar alone won't be enough to meet future energy demands; nuclear energy offers a stable, carbon-free alternative.
SMRs in Action: Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Washington will power Amazon's growth with clean energy.
Big Tech Is All In: Microsoft and Google are also betting on nuclear to sustain their massive energy requirements.
Amazon's Net-Zero Path: Amazon achieved its renewable energy goal seven years early, staying ahead in the race for carbon neutrality.
